It reaches its highest level in your blood about 1.5 to 2 hours after you swallow it, and it has a half-life of about 5 hours. That is why UK product information says you should leave at least 12 hours before you drive.

Key facts

What it is: Zopiclone is a “Z-drug” sleeping tablet (a hypnotic).

Licensed use (UK): Short-term treatment of insomnia in adults.

Legal status: Class C controlled drug, Schedule 4 Part 1.

Needs a prescription: Yes

Starts working: About 30 to 60 minutes

Half-life: About 5 hours (about 7 hours in older adults)

Last checked: October 2026

This guide explains how long zopiclone takes to work, when to take it, how long it lasts and how long it stays in your system. Every figure comes from official UK product information, the NHS or published research. Always take zopiclone exactly as your prescriber tells you. For a full overview, see our complete guide to zopiclone.

How long does zopiclone take to work?

The NHS says zopiclone takes around 30 to 60 minutes to start working. Most people start to feel drowsy within that window. You may notice it sooner or later depending on your body and how you take it.

Starting to work is not the same as reaching its full level. The Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) for zopiclone 7.5 mg says levels in the blood peak within 1.5 to 2 hours. It also says zopiclone is absorbed quickly, with about 80% of the dose reaching your bloodstream.

Here is what happens after a single bedtime dose, using the official figures:

Time after taking it

What is happening

30 to 60 minutes

It usually starts to work and you begin to feel sleepy.

1.5 to 2 hours

The level in your blood is at its highest.

About 5 hours

About half the dose has been cleared (7 hours in older adults).

12 hours

The minimum gap UK product information recommends before you drive.

About 1 day

Most of the dose has left your body (longer in older adults).

These are typical figures. Your own timings can differ, which is why you should judge how you feel, not just the clock.

When should you take zopiclone?

Take zopiclone once a night, just before you go to bed. The NHS advice on how and when to take zopiclone says to swallow the tablet whole with a drink of water. Do not take it earlier in the evening and then stay up.

How long before bed should you take it?

There is no waiting period. UK product information says to take it shortly before you settle down for the night. Because it can start working within 30 minutes, it is safest to be ready for bed when you take it.

The Grindeks SmPC for zopiclone 7.5 mg adds a useful detail. It says to take the tablet sitting or standing upright, because absorption may be delayed if you take it lying down.

Make sure you have a full night ahead

Only take zopiclone when you can sleep for a full night. The product information for zopiclone 3.75 mg describes this as uninterrupted sleep of about 7 to 8 hours. If you have to get up early, talk to your prescriber before you take it.

Does food make a difference?

You can eat as usual. The SmPC states that food does not change how zopiclone is absorbed. Alcohol is different. Do not drink alcohol with zopiclone, as it can make the sedative effect stronger.

What is the half-life of zopiclone?

The half-life is the time it takes for the level of a medicine in your blood to fall by half. For zopiclone, UK product information gives an elimination half-life of about 5 hours.

In older adults, the liver clears zopiclone a little more slowly. The SmPC says the half-life rises to about 7 hours in this group. This is one reason older adults usually start on the lowest dose, as our guide to zopiclone doses explains.

The SmPC also says zopiclone does not build up in the blood when it is taken every night. How fast your body clears it stays about the same across the licensed dose range.

How long does zopiclone stay in your system?

A medicine is mostly cleared after a few half-lives. A pharmacology review published on the NIH Bookshelf explains that 94% to 97% of a medicine is eliminated after 4 to 5 half-lives.

With a half-life of about 5 hours, that works out at roughly 20 to 25 hours for most adults. With a 7-hour half-life, it is roughly 28 to 35 hours for older adults. These are estimates we have worked out from the official figures, not exact times for any one person.

Your body breaks zopiclone down mainly in the liver. The SmPC says about 80% leaves in urine and about 16% in faeces, mostly as broken-down products.

If you need a medical or workplace test, tell the person testing you about any medicines you have been prescribed. Your pharmacist can help if you are unsure what to say.

What can make zopiclone last longer?

Some things slow down how your body clears zopiclone. This means it can stay active for longer and you may feel drowsy the next day.

Older age: the half-life rises from about 5 to about 7 hours.

Liver problems: the Grindeks SmPC says clearance falls by about 40% in liver cirrhosis, so the dose needs adjusting. Zopiclone must not be used in severe liver problems.

Some other medicines: drugs that block the liver enzyme CYP3A4 can raise zopiclone levels. The SmPC names erythromycin, clarithromycin, ketoconazole, itraconazole and ritonavir. It says erythromycin raises zopiclone exposure by 80%.

Alcohol and other sedating medicines: these add to zopiclone’s effects. Taking it with opioid painkillers raises the risk of deep sedation and breathing problems.

Some medicines, such as rifampicin, carbamazepine and St John’s wort, can do the opposite and make zopiclone less effective. Always tell your prescriber and pharmacist about every medicine and herbal remedy you take.

Next-morning effects and driving

Zopiclone can still affect you the morning after, even if you feel awake. Feeling tired, sleepy or less alert the next day is a common side effect. Our guide to zopiclone side effects covers the others.

The Grindeks SmPC recommends an uninterrupted rest of at least 12 hours between taking zopiclone and driving. The NHS gives the same advice for riding a bike and using machinery. If you still feel sleepy or dazed after 12 hours, wait until the feeling has passed.

What the research shows

A pooled analysis of four placebo-controlled driving studies tested 101 healthy volunteers on a real road. Driving was measured 10 to 11 hours after a 7.5 mg bedtime dose. Zopiclone caused clinically relevant impairment the next morning, in both men and women, up to age 75.

The researchers compared the effect with a blood alcohol level linked to a two- to three-fold higher risk of crashing. They advised people taking it to avoid driving the next morning.

What the law says

Under UK law it is illegal to drive if any medicine makes you unfit to drive, including prescribed ones. Zopiclone is not on the GOV.UK list of named medicines with set blood limits, but the “unfit to drive” rule still applies. A conviction can mean at least a 1-year driving ban, an unlimited fine and up to 6 months in prison.

What if zopiclone does not seem to work?

If you are still awake after an hour, do not take another tablet. UK product information says zopiclone is taken in a single dose and must not be taken again in the same night. A second dose leaves more medicine in your body when you need to get up. Read more about what happens if you take zopiclone and stay awake, and what to do if it is not working.

If you forgot your dose at bedtime, skip it and take your next dose the following night. Never take it in the middle of the night or in the morning, and never take a double dose.

Zopiclone is meant for short-term use. The 7.5 mg SmPC says a course should not last longer than 4 weeks, including the time spent reducing the dose. Your body can get used to it, so it may work less well over time. If it no longer helps, talk to your doctor rather than taking more. Our guide to insomnia covers other ways to improve sleep.

Is zopiclone a controlled drug?

Yes. Zopiclone was made a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act in 2014. It was added to Schedule 4 Part 1 from 10 June 2014. It is only legally supplied in the UK with a prescription.
